Jump Rope Videos

This is easily the most original jump rope video we’ve seen yet. This is the trailer for “Welcome to Jumptown”. “Jumptown” is a film by USAJR All Star and current Grand National Champion Lee Reisig. Lee has been called the “Mad Scientist of Jump Rope”, and for good reason… the guy is a jump rope genius. He is bursting with creativity, which should be readily apparent once you watch his video.

I’m very impressed at the level of effort and dedication that went into making “Jumptown”. Lee says that it took “about 2 years” to make. The actual movie is 2 hours 4 minutes long, with about 20 minutes of bonus materials. It not only stars Lee, but several other jumpers as well including Peter Caracciolo, Bryan Diebels, Karen Hay, Jeanette Hronek, Shane Winsor, Ali Reisig, Kelsy Moe, and Calli Wold. What a cast! Earlier this year I was interviewed for an article on Jump Rope that appeared in NC State Magazine. The article is excellent and focuses on several NC State students that are among the most elite jumpers in the sport. It’s an amazing group of jumpers: Kristen Bailey, Suzanne Cash, Joe Edney, Anna Holdaway, Ted Lehman, Timothy Martin, Tyler Perez and Lauren Perdue. If Jump Rope were a college sport, NC State would be extremely tough to beat. It might be a toss up between NC State and Boise State (Kelsy Moe, Shane Winsor, Lee Reisig, Calli Wold) but it’s safe to say both schools are loaded with talent. At any rate, go check out the article, it does a great job of capturing the excitement of jump rope and talking about how it is ready to bust wide open into the mainstream. It’s great to see the sport treated with the respect it deserves. They also have an accompanying web feature on Jump Rope with some exclusive videos. There is even a page dedicated to JRV.

Here is a great video of pro rope skipper Rene Bibaud. Rene is a lot of fun to watch. Her movements are very crisp and graceful. She’s so smooth and quick that it is difficult to tell when she misses. Rene is one of a handful of pros in the world. She is an amazing performer. Rene is a 5-time world champion. She does commentary for the USAJR Nationals on ESPN. She has even coached and performed with Cirque Du Soleil. You can contact Rene through her website at jumpropenet.com.

Here is another cool performance from Tokyo University in Japan. This is Double Dutch team Chaba.

A multiple under is when a jump rope revolves around your body more than once in a single jump. A double under is two revolutions of the rope in one jump. A triple under is three. A quadruple, four. Quintuple is five. And the mother of all multiple unders is the sextuple under. A sextuple, as you might have guessed, passes around your body six times before you land. I don’t know of anyone that has cracked the septuple under without assistance from a trampoline. A double under is considered a very basic trick. Triples are intermediate skill level. Quads are advanced. Quintuples and higher are considered masters level tricks. There are very few people in the world that can do a Sextuple under.

This is Japanese Double Dutch team Noroshi’s performance at Tokyo University in Japan. This is what is known as a Fusion routine. Once again, this is an expertly crafted routine. Everything is in constant motion and everyone gets involved. These routines are just plain fun to watch. Sometimes it takes watching routines like this several times to catch all of the intricacies. I challenge you to just focus on just one jumper and follow only that jumper for the entire routine. It’s extremely difficult to do. Make sure you don’t just focus on the jumpers, watch the turners too. There is some great turner involvement going on in this routine. In particular pay attention to what the turners do on the final speed step. That’s some pretty cool stuff.

This is a Japanese Double Dutch team performing at Tokyo University in 2006. It is an amazing performance. Their routine is very tight. All of their movements are perfectly synchronized to the music. They move very fluidly and jump with attitude and confidence. This is how you do Double Dutch.

Here is another “Crazy Rope Skipping Team” from Japan! This is a cool video. The use of punk rock for the soundtrack is a nice change of pace for a sport that is largely dominated by hip-hop and dance music. It gives the video more of an X-Games feel. I’ve always thought that due to the extreme nature of some of the more advanced tricks that Jump Rope could easily fit in alongside the Skateboard and BMX competitions of the X-Games. Some of our biggest and baddest tricks are every bit as insane and dangerous as some of the stunts done by those guys. Unfortunately, Jump Rope has spent a long time overcoming the image that it is just a game that girls play at recess. It is finally breaking out of those outdated stereotypes and people are beginning to take notice of just how cool and diverse this sport really is.

If I read the results correctly, it looks like Tori Boggs went home with a lot of new hardware to put on display. She won the Female Triple Unders, Female Single Rope Speed, Female Three Minute Speed, and Female Single Rope Freestyle events. That basically amounts to a sweep of the individual single rope events which is absolutely amazing! She is clearly one of the top athletes our sport has ever seen.

Here is some video from a team that made it “on Stage” at Nationals. This is an all male team from Hot Dog USA performing their Double Dutch Pairs Freestyle on stage during the Grand National Championship. This is a great routine with some very innovative tricks. The Double Leap Frog that they start the routine with is a really cool trick. This routine was good enough to earn them 2nd place, which is an amazing accomplishment in today’s hyper-competitive field.
