DOUBLE DUTCH CONTEST JAPAN VOL.7

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

The results for Double Dutch Contest Japan Vol. 7 have been announced. You can check them out on the DDC.jp website. Here they are translated in english, thanks to Google. This year the DDCJ had 96 teams with a total of 507 jumpers competing. That’s a record turnout for the event.

This is a promo video for the event which has some very impressive jumping in it. Check out the guy jumping on his hands in an amazing display of strength and balance. He does at least 13 consecutive jumps on his hands before the video cuts to the next shot. Very impressive.

JUMP! - Jump Rope Documentary Film Trailer

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Finally!!! Today they posted a trailer for JUMP! on YouTube! (Yes, I did a little dance after I watched it. It’s THAT good.) For those that haven’t heard about it, JUMP! is a documentary that focuses on the sport we all know and love. Starting in 2005, director Helen Hood Scheer flew all over the U.S. to film some of the top jumpers in the country. The film follows kids from 5 different teams as they train for and compete at Nationals and Worlds.

The cast is an amazing collection of some of the top Jump Rope talent in the world:

Tori Boggs (River Valley Skippers)
Emily Bonnette (River Valley Skippers)
Marcus Taylor (Ropin’ Rockets)
Nick Woodard (RazzMaTazz)
Jeff Mauss (RazzMaTazz)
Lee Reisig (Summerwind Skippers)
Style Harper (West End YMCA Rope Twisters)
Jaz O’Neal (West End YMCA Rope Twisters)
Shaun Hamilton (Head Coach of Team USA)

I can’t wait to see this movie. The trailer ROCKS! Check it out:

Bouncing Bulldogs at the 2007 Double Dutch Holiday Classic

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

Here is the Advanced Fusion routine from the Bouncing Bulldogs at the 2007 Double Dutch Holiday Classic. It’s a very impressive and extremely difficult routine. There are some extremely innovative double dutch tricks in this routine. The Bulldogs placed 4th in this event behind three Japanese teams. The misses clearly hurt their chances of winning the whole thing. I wonder how much higher they would have placed if they nailed it. Even with the misses, I’m blown away by what this team can do in the ropes.

Double Dutch Holiday Classic on CBS Evening News

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

CBS Evening News visited Harlem to report on the Double Dutch Holiday Classic. It’s great that Jump Rope is getting some exposure at the national level, but unfortunately their coverage is a little misleading.

CBS reports that the event “amounts to Rope Skipping’s World Championships.” Real jumpers know that Worlds will be held in Cape Town, South Africa in July 2008. The US trials for selecting Team USA will be held in Mason, Ohio in late January. The Double Dutch Holiday Classic is certainly a high profile event, but it is definitely not the world championships of rope skipping.

CBS also reports that Japanese teams “took first, second, and third.” That’s accurate, but only for one event. The Advanced Fusion event is what they are referring to. And yes, Japanese teams took the top three spots with the Bouncing Bulldogs coming in fourth. However that doesn’t give a complete picture of the results. The Bulldogs actually dominated the competition. They won 8 out of 10 events and actually won the Novice Fusion event. Very impressive.

That being said, it’s great to see the popularity of our sport continue to grow. Here’s the report from CBS:

Razz-Ma-Tazz Double Dutch Single Freestyle

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

On a previous post, Carolyn made the following comment:

“I think the routines that are full of all skipping elements are much more interesting to watch. Routines that are created for competition and are filled with turner/jumper involvement and skilled that are in combinations. Could you show more of those sometimes?”

Well, Carolyn, this video is for you. This a Double Dutch single freestyle routine by the Razz-Ma-Tazz (Nick Woodard, Jeff Mauss, and Katrina Bartkowiak). They earned a 9.8 for this routine in competition. There is not a wasted jump in this routine. The routine is loaded with masters level tricks and lots of turner involvement. It doesn’t get much harder than this.
