Another Sick Double Dutch Trick from Southern Camp Staff

Friday, November 16th, 2007

Here’s another sick Double Dutch trick from some of the staff at Southern Jump Rope camp. Southern camp has historically been a hotbed of innovation in jump rope. Several tricks have been invented just for the staff show that marks the last night of camp each year. That is where we did the very first Subway, where the Grand Central Station was created, and where this trick was performed.

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!

WSJ: Bested by Japan, A Jump-Rope Team Plots a Comeback

Friday, November 9th, 2007

This video was submitted to us by Angela Martin of the Wall Street Journal Online. From the folks at WSJ Online:

To most people, jump-rope is what children do to pass time on playgrounds and street corners. But over the past decade, it has blossomed into an international sport, with hundreds of teams and thousands of global competitors. WSJ’s Jamin Brophy-Warren visits the North Carolina Bulldogs who think they have a shot at the Apollo Theater’s annual Double Dutch title, which has been dominated by the Japanese.

Be sure to check out the full article at the WSJ Online.

Double Dutch Delight 2007 - PRISM

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

This video was recommended by USA Jump Rope All Star Mike Fry. Mike says:

I just came across this video, and thought they did some pretty cool things (one of the turners does a triple jump through like it’s nothing).

When somebody of Mike Fry’s caliber recommends a video… I listen.

Ropeworks at Seattle Folklife 2007

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

This is a video of the Ropeworks performance troupe at the Seattle Folklife festival 2007. It is a very professional jump rope demonstration. You can definitely see Rene Bibaud’s influence on their jumping style. It feels like this is straight out of one of her Cirque Du Soleil performances which is quite an accomplishment. It’s always great to see a show that successfully blends multiple styles. In this video we get to see single rope, double dutch, traveler, and chinese wheel.

Razz-Ma-Tazz Double Dutch Single Freestyle

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

On a previous post, Carolyn made the following comment:

“I think the routines that are full of all skipping elements are much more interesting to watch. Routines that are created for competition and are filled with turner/jumper involvement and skilled that are in combinations. Could you show more of those sometimes?”

Well, Carolyn, this video is for you. This a Double Dutch single freestyle routine by the Razz-Ma-Tazz (Nick Woodard, Jeff Mauss, and Katrina Bartkowiak). They earned a 9.8 for this routine in competition. There is not a wasted jump in this routine. The routine is loaded with masters level tricks and lots of turner involvement. It doesn’t get much harder than this.

Rope Skipping Demonstration

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

Here is a great performance by the staff of the 2007 Rope Skipping camp in Aarhus, Denmark. They are clearly a high caliber group of jumpers. They attempt a lot of tricks with an extremely high level of difficulty. I like how they mix up the show with a lot of Double Dutch, Chinese Wheel, and Single Rope freestyle.

What kind of Double Dutch ropes do you prefer?

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

I’ve noticed that different people prefer different types of double dutch ropes. Some people are more speed focused, so they use smaller diameter ropes like cable/wire ropes or licorice/speed ropes. Some people are more freestyle focused and use either beaded ropes or cloth ropes. Just on my team I’ve noticed that some people prefer beaded ropes for freestyle while others prefer cloth ropes for freestyle. Let’s put it to a vote… what kind of double dutch ropes do you prefer to use? If you are new to Double Dutch and curious about the differences, you can read more on my post about getting started with double dutch. If you’ve been jumping for a while and have tried different types of rope, leave a comment to tell us why you prefer the type of rope you use.

DDF Crew Promo Video

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Here is a great promo video for DDF. It is a compilation of several of their high profile performances. It looks great. They also have a new website so you can stay on top of the latest DDF news. These guys are blowing up! Between filming music videos, commercials, TV appearances, and competitions, I don’t know when they have time to eat or sleep.
